Therapeutic ultrasound for clogged milk ducts

I offer therapeutic ultrasound along with lymphatic massage if you are experiencing breast pain from a clogged milk duct or acute mastitis. It is ideal to have treatment as soon as possible from symptom onset to prevent possible progression to mastitis or a breast abscess. If you are experiencing chills, a fever, or if your breast feels hot to the touch you must see your physician or birth provider prior to booking an appointment for treatment.

According to the updated Mastitis Protocol in 2022 from the Academy of Breastfeeding Medicine, therapeutic ultrasound is an effective treatment for clogged milk ducts, and clogged milk ducts are considered part of the mastitis spectrum. The ultrasound waves generate an electrical signal which pass through the skin and cause a vibration of the soft tissue for the clogged milk duct to break down, thus improving milk flow and pain levels. Research shows that symptoms improve with an average of 3.3 sessions.

Indications for treatment of clogged milk ducts with therapeutic ultrasound include:

  • Decreased unilateral milk production

  • Localized breast pain or redness in lactation

  • Breast pain and swelling in lactation

  • Mastitis - If you have bacterial mastitis, you must be on antibiotics for at least 24 hours prescribed from your physician or birth provider prior to supplementing treatment with therapeutic ultrasound

Note: Therapeutic ultrasound is not meant to be a standalone treatment and often works best when combined with icing, nursing or pumping on demand, and appropriate use of NSAIDs to reduce the inflammatory process. I highly recommend seeking care from an IBCLC to determine the root cause of your symptoms whether it may be from latching mechanics, managing oversupply, and ensuring proper flange size if you are pumping as clogged milk ducts often occur from inadequate emptying of milk from the breast. I am more than happy to refer you to some local IBCLCs if you need a resource!
